So, with the whole "nesting" thing going on we've been crazy busy. We rearranged our living room at least 5 times (poor husband), got new bedroom furniture and a new sideboard, cleaned out our closets and donated a ton of stuff to Goodwill, painted the hardware in the kitchen, diy'd a couple of giant mirrors, finished the baby's nursery, and decided to start dining more ethnically. That last one is a little strange, I know, but on a whim we put some smaller legs on our dining table, so now we are essentially eating off the floor. I guess if I wanted to sound a bit more hip, I could claim that we are having a Bohemian Chic moment. Not really, but kind of.... We bought a few floor stools from Ikea and it has been so much fun changing things up a bit. I'm still surprised my husband agreed to this hormonal urge!

Our new midcentury sideboard is in the back and in the photo below - we love it! It's the perfect stand for our giant espresso maker, and a great organizer for office & craft supplies, kitchen overflow, and all of those other odds & ends you can never find an actual place for. Think of it as a giant junk drawer, but much more organized!

Here are the banana leaf Ikea Alseda Stools (only $29.99 each!) we bought that bring you up to the perfect dining height - they were stacked up on the other side of the room from when I was cleaning, but they look perfect around the table. Trust me, really!

What is your take on this? Good idea or hormonal craziness?? Don't worry - we kept the regular legs and can always go back to our high top table when elderly relatives come to visit or when we feel the need to teach the baby some serious table manners. For now, we're diggin' it!

The "cheese" cake

I saw this on A Cup of Jo yesterday - a modern and savory cheese cake! Maybe it's because right now I am not allowed to indulge in certain cheeses like Brie, Camembert, and Gorgonzola, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about these ever since. Makes me want to throw a wine tasting & cheese party just so I can make one!

This "Gold Hill" version features has a hefty price tag of 205 British Pounds (about $320), but feeds 110-120 people. I think it could be replicated at home for much cheaper.

So, I guess I needed a blog break - a long blog break. I've been busy, though, "nesting" for the arrival that we are getting in 9 weeks. This past weekend, we were able to getaway to the coast for our last trip before the little guy arrives. Rockaway Beach on the Oregon Coast was just what we needed - quiet, relaxing and overflowing with fresh seafood, delicious artisan cheeses and creamy Tillamook ice cream - black walnut, please!! The cottage we rented was what one might call shabby, not chic, but had the most amazing view of twin rocks and the ocean and a lovely patio perfect for reading all of those baby books in preparation for the big day. I was cleaning the bathtub the other day with some sort of industrial strength muck and found myself in a chemical haze. Headache. Scratchy throat. Nasty taste in my mouth. It all led me to jump online and do a little research. I found the following appalling factoid:

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the air inside the typical home is on average 2-5 times more polluted than the air just outside—and in extreme cases 100 times more contaminated—largely because of household cleaners and pesticides.

What?? Think about this - the cleaners that you use to de-germ your house are likely more harmful than the germs themselves. They include strong, artificial ingredients and harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, and alcohol. We are hurting ourselves, our children, our pets, the environment, etc. etc. etc. I find this incredibly disqusting, not to mention a cause of some serious anxiety. I went under my kitchen sink, threw out every single toxic cleaner I owned (which luckily wasn't many!), and made a pledge to buy & make safe, non-toxic, environmentally friendly cleaners. I found a couple recipes to get me started and it seems pretty easy.

Basic ingredients:

Vegetable oil based soap (like Dr. Bronners), water, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, borax, essential oils, tea tree oil.

Recipes.

This is fun - it's like cooking, but you can't eat it! Insead, the reward is knowing you will have a clean house without giving yourself cancer. Sounds harsh, but this is serious business!

All purpose cleaners - for countertops, floors, walls, carpet & upholstery. Combine in a spray bottle:

Dissolve 4 tablespoons baking soda in 1 quart warm water.
Add 1/2 cup vinegar to between 1 cup and 1 quart of warm water.
Combine 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil based liquid soap and 3/4 cup warm water. Shake to blend.

Abrasive cleaner: Use baking soda or non-chlorinated scouring powder (like Bon Ami).

Grease cleaner - use a mix of vinegar and salt.

Disinfectant - for kitchen cutting boards and the bathroom: use a spray of distilled white vinegar followed by a 3 % peroxide spray. Wipe clean.

Glass cleaner - mix 1 quart warm water with 1/4 cup white vinegar. Add 2 tablespoons lemon juice for a citrus scented version or add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil.

Furniture polish - 1/2 teaspoon oil (like olive or jojoba), 1/4 cup vinegar or lemon juice (fresh works best of course!). Mix in a glass jar and use a soft rag to dab and wipe onto wood.

Two of my personal favorite safe & environmentally friendly brands to buy are Seventh Generation (expensive, but you can find coupons here) and Trader Joes Cleanliness is Next to Godliness (for the more frugal cleaner)!

Feeling nostalgic

I think I must be in need of a vacation, because I can't stop thinking about traveling. Enough with this two weeks off a year business - it's completely for the birds! My husband is from England and as you most probably know, like most civilized countries they get a minimum of like 30 days off a year. I need to live in a country that values quality of life over corporate greed - this is just plain annoying! :)

While I was dreaming up a scheme for life abroad (still in progress), I was looking at pictures of my last trip to Spain. We always go back to the same village in the southern part because my husband's family has a place there - so lovely! I need to go back. Soon.

Such a simple and enjoyable way of life!

P.S. If anyone has some good ideas about living/working abroad I would love to hear them!!

Made a tea cozy (below) without a pattern - it's a little large, but totally does the trick. On Sunday it kept our tea warm for 3 hours!!

Marmalade making. This was my first go at Marmalade - I used the Barefoot Contessa's recipe - it's delicious, but not as jelly-ish in texture as I am used to.

Sunday morning.

I made Kate's amazing little Baked Apple Donuts. They were delicious - probably because you dip them in butter and them roll them in cinnamon & sugar - that always helps! I made them to bring over to my friend Darshana's house. I got to visit with her and her adorable little girl Mira, and drink Darsh's tasty Cha tea. I am not sure if it is different than Chai (I'll have to check on that), but it is completely soul warming - lots of spices, fresh ginger, milk and a little bit of sugar! Thanks Darsh!

Sunday Day.

Headed out with the husband and grabbed a beer over at Prost! Again, for those in the Portland area this was such a fun place - obviously German. They have a great beer selection - and the waitstaff was seriously the most friendly and fun that I have met in a long, long time! The three people next to us were drinking the "boot" - 2 liters of any tasty malty beverage they have on draft. I guess there is some rule that once the bartender pours it, the boot can't touch the bartop until it is completely empty. They offered to share with us, but it was a little early for me to start downing liter after liter! It was somewhere around 1:30 and they had already been "tasting" tequila!

Sunday evening.

Home to make some pickled eggs. I have only had pickled eggs once and wasn't the biggest fan in the world - they are super rubbery. But my husband loves them (he's English - that's his excuse!), so we decided to try to make a spicy version at home. They'll be ready in 4 weeks. Sounds gross, but I'm an adventurous eater so I'll let you know how they taste!

Friday Flavor: Dulce de Leche

I love ice cream and when I say love, I mean LOVE! I could eat it all day, and for every meal. Seriously. Now you see why I need my big workout regimen, right! Kate's new Friday Flavor, Dulce de Leche, is the perfect accoutrement for my homemade vanilla bean gelato (recipe found here)!! It would also be the perfect homemade treat for your favorite Valentine's!

one of my very best friends ever......

I am slightly obsessed with homemade gifts. This year, I have made pickles, BBQ sauce, infused bourbon... I've done it all. Around Christmas, the theme for my family's annual Yankee swap was the letter "A" (don't ask- every family has weird traditions, right?) So, in a major stretch, I decided to give gifts from Argentina- one of which is my attempt at homemade Dulce de Leche. After a lot of recipe and blog reading, I felt like this was something I could take on... It's pretty simple ingredients-wise and seemed like something I could do in a night. So, I got to work and had so much fun in the kitchen doing it and ended up with a really tasty sauce that that made the most awesome gift! I hope you give this one a try!

Here's what you need:

a big pot. Bigger than you think you'll need. I will explain why later.
4 c whole milk
2 c sugar
1 vanilla bean (you sub 1 teaspoon of extract, but I really like the look of the flecks of seeds you get with the actual bean)
1 teaspoon baking soda

Split the vanilla bean down the middle. Heat milk, sugar and vanilla bean over medium heat and whisk until the sugar is completely dissolved (about 20 minutes). Lower the heat and add the baking soda. Here is where the big pot comes into play. You need a lot of space in the pot because this shit is going to GROW. I mean bubble and foam like your 8th grade volcano science project. I kind of wish I didn't tell you this part and let you have the experience that I had in my kitchen. I just stood there in a daze staring at this ever-expanding mass of foam overflow onto my stove top. I ended up with a pretty big mess on my hands, but the final result was well worth it!

At this point, it's pretty simple. The foam will go down eventually. Don't try to whisk it back into the liquid, just let it do its thing and give it an occasional gentle stir, about every 5 minutes. It will bubble away for about 2 hours, slowly getting darker and thicker. Once you get to the consistency you like (remember it will thicken as it cools), kill the heat. I put mine through a strainer just to get out any clumps- not necessary, I was just going for a super pro look since it was going to be a gift. Pour into jars. Let cool a bit before putting on the lid to avoid condensation. Will last in the fridge for a few months. If you have a pressure canning system, you can preserve it, but don't use a hot water bath. The temp doesn't get high enough to kill everything, so you are better off keeping it in the fridge.

I hope you try it out! It is really fun to do and the sauce is AMAZING on ice cream, drizzled over chocolate cake, nestled between two shortbread cookies...YUM!

I can't wait to make this! Just slap a red bow on and you are set for the 14th!

Hydration nation

I don't have time to write up a whole post today, but had to put up my latest & greatest hydration find. I know water is pretty much life blood and I do drink it, but it is always so much tastier (and vitamin & electrolite packed) when I unload a little packet of Emergen-C into it. Last night, I stopped at Whole Foods after work and discovered the newest flavor. Blue. As in Blue-berry. I am in hydration heaven. Blueberries are my absolute favorite (I eat flats and flats of them in the summer!) and this new Emergen-C tastes just like Blueberry juice. If you ever had the Knudsen Family "Just Blueberry" juice, you will know exactly what I am talking about! I know - delicious! Can't wait to drink my eight glasses today!

Resolution follow up

I consider myself a pretty active girl. I run a few times a week, go to yoga classes, walk with friends. But year after year on January 1st, I vow to be more fit. I know - not a new concept. Ever since I hit the big 3-0 I feel like it's harder to keep my muscles toned, so this resolution comes in more handy as the years go by. I don't know if that's in my head or not, but as a way to get my arms tank top ready and to build strength, I decided to do

My husband and I are in the middle of week 2 and I am already up to 16 push ups. Can you believe it! I'm not going to lie - it doesn't feel good while you are doing it, but it takes no time at all! Seriously, it is only like a 1/2 hour a week and is totally worth it!

Also, I just saw the greatest motivational tip over at over at Mucho Mucho Bueno Beuno! Put your swimsuit on once a month in winter months to keep yourself "inspired". Scary, but great idea!

I was recently reading a blog where the author was ranting about how 80% of the blogs she reads are "fluff". I felt frustrated and disheartened by the post, and I found myself feeling guilty for my own personal pieces of "fluff". It led me to think, "what exactly is a quality post?"

blog (noun): short for weblog;

a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer;

I thought I would start with the definition via Merriam Webster. In reading this, I was reminded of the fact that a blog is a personal journal. Personal journal - repeat that to yourself. In all reality, you should be able to write about whatever thoughts, interests, feelings, likes, dislikes, etc. You would do it in a personal handwritten version, right? Why is it so important to not have "fluff" if "fluff" is what you feel like posting in your personal journal that day?

This is my version of the rant. I say "Here's to posting whatever you would like to say without the guilt!" And this totally includes blogging about the lack of quality reading out there in the blogosphere (thanks for the food for thought, btw!). Read and write your blogs as you wish - learn something new, post new ideas, connect with people, laugh, discover a new fashion trend, look at beautfiul pictures, and of course, "fluff" to your heart's content.

To roll or not to roll?

When I'm headed to class, it's usually in a bit of a rush. I head straight from work, sometimes in my corporate wear (ha!) and sometimes I have a chance to pull a switch and change into more comfortable clothes. Yesterday, I showed up at school wearing some skinny jeans with ballet flats (and a shirt, of course, but that doesn't really add to the story). The skinnies were rolled up - I thought it looked pretty cute, but then a girl stopped me and.....

Beginning of conversation.

Girl: "Can I ask you a kind of strange question?"

Me: "Um.....sure?"

Girl: "Do you roll your jeans because they are too long or because it's fashionable?"

Me: "I guess a little bit of both?"

End of conversation.

I think the more accurate answer was that I did roll them for fashion's sake. Like I said, I thought it looked cute. If my pants were too long, I probably would have them hemmed or wear some heels, right? So, what do you think? Do you roll?

I also just hand-dyed a couple of slips in purple and the brightest burnt orange - I promise to post some pics - they came out great. This is a super easy & cheap way to replicate some of the beautiful vintage dyed slips in fancy boutiques. I use a vegetable dye (feels less chemically) and you can make that as saturated or pastel-y as you like. Perfect for under your favorite dress!

Today, in my earlier post I asked for new book suggestions and in browing the cyberworld, I happened upon an entire book club! Over at Gabby's lovely Felinofelice , I came across the Slow Readers Book Club.

I often get annoyed about the craziness of the world - people that are attached to their cell phones (pretty much my biggest pet peeve ever!), constantly checking emails, always feeling like you have to go, go, go just to get ahead. Why can't we all just live life like Europeans - relax, vacation, enjoy meals with friends rather than scarf down some fast food monstrosity (eeeeewwwww). That is why the concept of the slow movement totally appeals. The book club is meant to be a part of that culture. The first book is Jeannette Wall's Half Broke Horses. I have no idea what it is about, but I am going to pick up a copy and join the party!

reading 'til I'm sick.....

I ride Trimet to work every day - usually the bus. It is super convenient, very reliable, earth friendly, and usually allows me to devour whatever book (or blog on the iphone) that I may be obsessed with at the moment. The only problem is that I tend to get ridiculously car/bus sick. Every day on the way to and from work I read and read and read right up until I am about to throw up on the passenger in front of me. Sometimes I actually get all the way to work without having to stop reading and sometimes I only get a couple of miles. I can't figure it out - I also usually get carsick faster on the way going home than I do on the way into the office. Anyway, I realize that this is completely weird. I am not in denial about it, but I just can't help myself when I find a book I love. I thought I would share my latest spew-worthy and not-so-spew-worthy reading material:

The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas(thank you Courtney - this one was absolutely brilliant!)

This book was crazy and pretty thought provoking - it was about science, faith, the concept of space and time, facing death, and a ton more. It was completely enjoyable - I couldn't put it down and would highly recommend it.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

I am a sucker for a good mystery. Actually, I retract that. I am a mystery whore. I prefer good to bad, but will happily read anything involving a crime and a solution (hello Patricia Cornwell, right!). There is something about reading a book by a classic author, though, and this one offered some great plot twists!

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

I am going to get completely lambasted for this, but I couldn't stand this novel. I love the idea of it - some sort of life tragedy forces a woman to live out her dreams of traveling, eating, spending time meditating, etc, but I just thought this one was so tedious (and completely unspew-worthy). It came highly recommended, though, so don't take my sourpuss review as gospel.

I think next on my list is Popco by Scarlett Thomas. If it is anything like Mr. Y, I will be finished with it in a couple of days, so I am hoping that some of you guys out there might be able to pass on some recommendations - let me know if there is something that is at the top of your book list!

Also, I just got these two craft books, which will help me on my way to fulfilling my craft more and sew more New Years resolutions. If anyone has tried any of Lotta's projects below - let me know. The book seems to be filled with simple, quick and cute projects. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Hi there - It has been a complete whirlwind the last couple of weeks. As almost everyone else, I have been way too busy running around. Luckily, things have calmed down a bit, aside from the upcoming work travel, busy meetings and advanced computer classes, things are finally going back to to normal. I've missed blogging and promise to be back on track. When I started this blog, I really wanted to be committed and the renewal of that commitment is one of my many New Year's resolutions. I hope everyone has been well and I am looking forward to reconnecting with my friends in the blogosphere.

Very interesting, chemical free and potentially heartburn friendly. Anyway, as I sit here completely & ridiculously caffeine deprived, I discovered that the new Lonny Magazine is out. Yeah!

Like most of you, I was slightly depressed when Domino Magazine announced that they were closing their doors. That magazine made me so happy when it was dropped in my mailbox! They always had the best, most stylish and fun home decor ideas. They had great articles featuring creative folks with inspiring stories of ingenuity. It was wonderful!

I've never really considered myself to have an addictive personality. I mean, I worked as a bartender for years and years and was surrounded by alcohol. I saw some seriously addicted people - that just isn't me. I was around cigarettes and friends that chain smoked, tried it myself, but it just didn't catch on. I went through a period of some serious over-imbibing and partying, but nothing ever stuck...luckily!

Lately, though, I have been reconsidering my thoughts about this. A few years ago, I has surgery on my stomach and a side effect of the surgery is severe heart burn. And for those of you who don't know, coffee = heartburn. It took me years to realize this (maybe I was in denial), but if you put the two together you have a horrible heartburn situation. I have been trying to wean myself off of the roasted deliciousness, but am having a really hard time. I just keep craving it, and the tea isn't helping. It isn't a good substitute.

Am I addicted? Do I just want it because I am telling myself that I can't have it? Do i just love the coffee culture here in Portland? Stumptown, Ristretto, Barista, Albina Press, Red E - we have some serious coffee shops in town. I mean, I live in the Pacific Northwest - coffee capital of the United States of America. What is a girl to do without the foamy goodness of a soy latte? or the perfect Americano first thing in the morning? I am sitting here right now dreaming of it. Any good substitutes that you guys know about?

Bright spot

For almost the entire time I have been writing on this blog, Laura Trevey has been a complete bright spot! From the very beginning she would log on and post friendly, encouraging comments. We all know how much those comments can brighten our day, especially during those first few weeks when it feels like you are talking to no one but yourself!

When I first visited her blog, Bright, Bold & Beautiful, I was completely taken by her pieces - they are absolutely gorgeous! Each watercolor features the most amazing colors, and they all seem to have the unique ability to bring me back to a certain moment in life. Below are a couple of my favorites, and a little snippet about the memory they evoke.

Belle of the Ball.

This piece reminds me of waking up on my wedding day. All of the dresses gorgeously hung up, the bright colors, and the lovely happy feeling that you have knowing what a special day lies ahead of you!

Ruby Fields.

This brings me right back to fall in Connecticut, which is where I grew up. There is nothing better than the Autumn leaves in New England.

Hosta Leaves II.

I live in Oregon and my back patio is completely hidden by large Doug Fir Trees. Nothing grows, aside from hosta! This year, I had my first successful shade garden in the back and the hosta was the absolute star. This reminds me of quiet mornings with cups of tea and the newspaper, relaxing and looking out over the garden.

Connections.

In the Oregon winter, the rain creates the most beautiful pixelated images. Most people think that Portland is miserable in the winter, but there is a really beautiful, cozy feeling that all of the darkness and rain bring with them. This image does that same thing for me!

I have been a ridiculously delinquent blogger this past week, and will have to be for the next couple of days. Plants a plenty

I have been trying to include more plantlife into my house, but I don't have the greenest thumb in the world. I usually end up killing most of what we have! Last weekend I headed over to Portland Nursery (the loveliest nursery in town) for some new greenery. I just knew that the helpful staff there would point me in the right direction - low maintenance, hearty, not easily murdered, plantlife. Week one has been pretty good. I replanted them in some lovely containers and they seem to be thriving. I got two snake plants, another one I can't remember the name of, and two succulents. I used to despise succulents, but have really grown to love them. I am on the hunt for some more intersesting ways of potting plants and have come across some lovely options!

The sake cup. I actually saw this on etsy awhile ago, and copied the idea for my two succulents that I bought last weekend. I found some beautiful blue and white cups and planted the two little guys in them. I can't find the picture right now, but here are some sake cups to inspire you - this was a super easy, quick and cute project!

The apartment garden. I am so in love with this idea. I first saw it on Design Sponge (I think) and have the website bookmarked for the next time I feel like whipping out the plastic. Great gift idea for anyone in the family and pretty inexpensive, too.

The air plant (bromeliad). I don't know much about these guys, but remember seeing these awhile back at the nursery and thinking they were pretty rad. I recall that they might be a bit on the spendy side, so may count as an investment in your plant future.

Origami Christmas

For some reason, I have never really gotten into origami. This is not because I don't like it, I just have never really tried to do it/been around people who have/etc. I think the paper is gorgeous and the art beautiful and for this year's Christmas Tree, I was thinking about trying to make a few origami ornaments. I finally hit 50 followers this lovely Thanksgiving weekend! And while that is a ridiculously small number in blogland, it is a perfect little milestone to lead me into the dreaded Monday following an amazingly relaxing four day weekend! Thanks so much to everyone who follows and comments! It's great fun to log on everyday and read the thoughts of others out there in the universe, especially when they leave little notes & ideas on something you have written on your own little blog.

I need a vacation

I love to travel, but for some reason have never been really into the whole cruise thing. The idea of living on a casino/shopping mall/club for a week and looking at the same strangers everyday doesn't really appeal, at least to me. Not to mention the fact that there are all sorts of germs and things incubating on those ships - eww!!

Karl Lagerfeld's 2010 cruise collection for Chanel is making me reconsider a few things. The man is a serious genius, and I am absolutely loving the lace & stripes from his latest. Not to mention the setting, the hair & the makeup - brilliant! If I can wear some of these while hopping on the boat, I might just have to start cruising.

Yesterday, my friend Andi said the reason that she gets so crafty around this time of year, is that creativity is in her star sign during the months of November and December. We're both Virgos so I am beginning to think my affinity for all things DIY might be in my cosmic make-up, too.

I recently hit the crafty jackpot. I discovered the most amazing blog through Jordan Ferney's Oh Happy Day. It is called Little Green Notebook, and I can't get enough. The stuff that Jenny comes up with is insane, and always looks gorgeous when she is finished. Did I mention that she has two little girls, and a third one on the way? I don't know where she finds the time to get to everything. She posts great tutorials, and tons of interior design ideas, too. You have to check it out - you will be truly inspired to use the coming long weekend to make over your house! Here are just a few of my favorite projects...

Friday Flavor: ButterCUP squash

I don't know about you guys, but I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Next week? What?!? Just think of all the festivities that await - the family & friends, the delicious dinner, and all of those massive holiday sales!

Kate the great is at it again with another delicious recipe, perfect for a T-day side dish! And, with this one I won't have to fight with the butternut or worry about skinning my knuckles trying to peel it - yahoo! Thanks for the recipe, Kate! Can't wait to give it a try next week!

So, Bird Day is right around the corner! Do you have your menu planned out? Or are have you been assigned a dish to bring to someone else’s house? Either way, today is less of a recipe and more of a concept. Today, I introduce you to butterCUP squash. No, that’s not a typo. It’s not butterNUT, it’s butterCUP. And, it’s delicious!

For decades now the go-to Thanksgiving squash has been the butternut. Oddly shaped, mildly flavored and downright dangerous to peel, seed and chop, this squash needs lots of doctoring with butter, salt, pepper, brown sugar, marshmallows, whatever, before it’s ready to hit the Thanksgiving table. I don’t get it? Why all the fuss when there is a far better alternative sitting right there next to it at the market? The buttercup squash on the other hand, is simple to prepare and requires only the most minimal additions to bring out its naturally sweet flavor.

Select one that feels heavy for its size, cut in half, scoop out the seeds and place on a cookie sheet, face up. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast at 425 degrees for about 45-60 minutes or until you can easily stick a knife into the flesh. Remove from oven, let cool for a bit and scoop out the flesh. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper and butter IF necessary. And there you go!

Chandeliers make me drool, part 1

I have been wanting a chandelier for a really long time. There is something so romantic about them & the light they cast throughout a room. They also add some serious glamour to any space. Unfortunately, in my current home, the traditional chandelier would look completely out of place. On the plus side, a great chandelier could be pretty spendy, so maybe it is lucky that I can't spend loads and loads of money on a serious piece of crystal. Who knows.

Still, every time I see one I can't help but feel like it has to be mine. I just have to wait to buy the house to go with it! These are some of the beautiful shots that make me drool.....

Friday Flavor: Turkey Cranberry Ravioli & thank goodness for great friends!

Kate's recipe and story are completely cracking me up today. I had totally blocked out our trials and tribulations together those first few months in Portland. We certainly felt like we were roughing it! And we kind of were, relative to what we were used to anyway. Thank goodness things have changed a bit, and thank goodness we were in it together - even if we wanted to kill each other at some points! Almost two years after we moved to Portland, Kate returned to the east coast. So sad - I miss you, Kate! Seriously, when are you going to move back out here?

Today’s recipe is a nod to my good friend and founder of this very blog! Heather and I trekked out to Portland, OR recently after graduating from UConn back in 2000. Neither one of us had any idea of what we were doing, where we were going to live or how we were going to find jobs! We just got in our cars and drove. The first few months were… interesting, to say the least! We slept on the floor, never turned on the heat and survived on cheap meals made in camping cookware. By the time Thanksgiving rolled around, we were definitely a bit homesick. Since we didn’t exactly have the capacity to create our own Thanksgiving meal, we ended up with some leftovers from a neighbor’s turkey dinner. SO SAD! I wish I had known about this recipe back then. It’s a simple way to get the flavors of Thanksgiving without wrestling with giblets and roasting pans. So, for all of you out who will be spending an intimate Thanksgiving with just one or two other dining companions, this is for you! Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey

Cranberry Ravioli

¼ pound of ground turkey

2 T cranberry sauce or chutney

2 T Romano

1 T Italian style bread crumbs

1 egg

1 teaspoon rubbed sage

½ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

20 store bought wonton wrappers

To make the ravioli: in a medium bowl, stir together the turkey, cranberry sauce, cheese, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Place 10 wonton wrappers on a work surface. Brush lightly with water using a pastry brush. Place 1 tablespoon of the turkey mixture on each of the wonton wrappers. Resist the temptation to overstuff! Top with another wonton wrapper. Push out any air bubbles and press the edges tightly to seal.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the ravioli and cook until tender but still firm to the bite and the turkey is cooked, stirring occasionally, about 3 minutes. Toss in melted butter, top with additional Romano.

Who needs paint?

I live in a rented townhouse, so have a very limited amount of creative juice I can pour into the color on the walls, etc. If I remember correctly, which I think that I do (?), putting paint on the walls is completely off limits. I don't know about you guys, but sometimes living in the world of white walls gets a bit depressing. Lately, I have had the urge to mix things up a bit, and look for some alternative options to regular wall art & paint.

Loving these Mandala Wall Decals in red-orange from Design Fruit. $70 for all three. Such an inexpensive & non-committal way to transform a room.

Fabric! Seriously endless possibilities and totally customizable. There is a great tutorial here, which involves only the fabric of your choice and some starch. Genius!

Tape wall - another amazingly genius idea. I'm not so sure I have the patience to keep all of these lines straight, but it is worth a try. All of these stripes are made with Permacel paper tape - tutorial located here.

I don't know about you guys, but I always have seriously good intentions for making some adorable Christmas gifts. Sometimes, though, the weeks seem to roll by and procrastination gets the better of me. I am really trying to stay true to it this year. I feel insanely inspired by some of the ideas I have seen online, and need to make them a priority.

Some of the most precious gifts I have ever received are the ones that people spent some time and thought putting together. I always feel so honored when someone cares enough to make something for me with their own two hands. It also feels really good to make something for someone you love, too. And often times, you can put something together on your own for much less that you would spend at the store. It's a total win, win, win situation. Here are some of the ones that have inspired me of late....

For the vintage lovers in your life: Modern Victorian Collar Scarf from ...love Meagan. This woman is DIY-mazing. She comes up with the cutest ways to replicate some of the latest trends.

For the trendies: Faux fur vest via p.s. I made this. Another seriously DIY-mazing lady.

For the coffee lover: Knitted French Press Cozy. I don't know about you, but I can always use one of these to keep my press nice and toasty!

For the contemplative one: A handmade journal from Curiously Craft. This really doesn't look that hard, and you can totally personalize it with the cover!

Map coasters via Martha. Adorable and unisex!

Homemade infused vodkas. Seriously the easiest thing in the world to make. I have done this numerous times, and it is always a big hit! I mean, who doesn't like a little holiday cheer, right!?!

You can keep it pretty standard (lemon, mango, cherry) or mix it up a bit (lavender, honey, mint, basil, etc!). Just have fun with it and be creative. They have some great instructions here. They also include a recipe for bacon vodka (yuk!) for the meat lover in your life. I have used regular ball jars, but recycled wine bottles work great as well! There are also some great recipes out there for homemade Irish Creme, Kahlua, & Lemoncello - all worth a try and bound to please.

Another extremely easy recipe......this is one of my own. Every year, I make a couple big batches of bath salts - they are perfect for stuffing stockings with, for bringing as a little hostess gift, or really, for just having around your own house. They are also ridiculously easy to make! You can also head to the Goodwill, or to Ikea to pick up some adorable glass jars to store them in.

What you will need: Epsom or sea salts & essential oil.

Put some parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Spread the epsom or sea salts over the parchment paper. Use a dropper to drop the essential oils all over the salts. Let dry overnight. Put the salts into the decorative jars, and you are all set to go. (my new idea for this year is to use little Vietnamese "Pho" spoons instead of the wooden scoops - super cute, right?)

As much as it pains me to do so, I've recently been reviewing my budget. I've decided that it's high time I re-evaluate things and make some changes in my spending habits. I've got bills to pay,right? And retirement to save for, and the college education of my future children to start planning....yikes! I've always been more of a live in the moment, non-committal kind of gal, so this "planning for the future" thing can be a little bit overwhelming.

Six months and counting....

My husband just reminded me that this week is our six month wedding anniversary! Yeah - I totally love being married. The only thing is that you have to start over with the numbers game. In real years, we have been together for almost 6, but in wedding years only 1/2. :)

The wedding was so lovely! We spent three amazing weeks in Spain for it with visits from about 50 of our closest friends and family sprinkled throughout. The little village we were in was pretty magical - its called Jimena de la Frontera. The best part about the wedding is that it was such a family effort and so low key - my husband's mother and sister catered it (and the food was amazing!!!), my girlfriends, family and I went to the market for flowers and made the bouquets and boutonnnieres, my mom made the wedding cake and we shopped for local desserts...and it was three days of fun events. Parties, parties, parties...and way too much cheese and jamon!

There have been quite a few people that have asked us why we chose to get married over there, but we never had a really good explanation. Really, there was just no where else that seemed right! Here are a couple pictures of the big day....

Friday Flavor: Pumpkin gnocchi

Yahoo....it's Friday again. I love it when this day rolls around, don't you? I kind of wish every day was Friday...or Saturday...or Sunday. They're so much more fun than the rest of the week! Anyhoo...my husband and I are headed out in the morning to pick some pumpkins, carve them and have a Halloween fiesta. The rest of the weekend will be spent totally diy style. I am so excited! Hope you all have a lovely weekend, too - go spend the night in a graveyard or something - it's Halloween, afterall!

Kate has a great recipe this week. I haven't had a chance to try this one out, but am thinking I will have to pick up the ingredients this weekend so I will have a nice, quick, delicious meal ready to put on the table one night next week.

Happy Halloween! So, of course I have to do something pumpkin today! I came up with this recipe about a year ago, on one of those nights where you come home from work and stare at the pantry hoping the ingredients will magically come together for you. It happened to be a particularly bad grocery week- meaning we had a crazy weekend and stocking up on food for the week didn't make the cut. Needless to say, I was totally shocked at what I ended up with- a delicious meal and perfect for Halloween!

What you need:
1 pound gnocchi (I had whole wheat on hand and I actually prefer it in this recipe, but it's hard to come by. You can also just use whole wheat penne too)
2 tablespoon olive oil
1 shallot, diced
4 slices bacon, diced
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 can low-sodium chicken stock
1 can pumpkin puree (I really like Whole Foods 365 canned pumpkin the best!)
1 teaspoon rubbed sage (if it's in a jar- it's "rubbed")
1/2 teaspoon fresh nutmeg
Salt
Pepper
Grated parmesan

Cook pasta according to directions. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet. Cook the bacon until crispy. Remove, place on paper towel.

Drain off fat and wipe out the pan (although, I wish it were still 1950 and it was socially acceptable to cook with bacon fat!). Add 1 tablespoon to the pan, toss in shallots and garlic. (don't try to take a short cut and cook the bacon, shallots together. There is too much water in the shallots and it will make the bacon soggy instead of crispy!) Once shallots and garlic are fragrant, add chicken stock and pumpkin. Add nutmeg, sage, salt and pepper (take it easy on the salt- we are adding the salty bacon back in the mix soon). Let it simmer until it comes together, about 4 minutes. Add the gnocchi and the bacon and toss together. Serve in bowls topped with parmesan. Enjoy!

I don't actually remember how I happened upon this site, but it is amazing. You have to check it out. James Andrew lives out an insanely dreamy life. He is a NY based interior designer that might be the best dressed man I have ever seen. I know, I know....I live in Portland, Oregon so that might not be the most impressive statement, but I would pretty much bet my whole bank account on it! It's way metro and slightly costume-y, but he totally rocks it. Not many people could pull this off.

His blog What is James Wearing is a compilation of all things uber-luxurious - Paris, Milan, Gucci, Hermes, runways, cocktail parties, gallery openings, etc., etc., as well as photos of his ridiculously glamourous ensembles. The photos of his interiors and his inspirations are pretty great, and the design advice is a nice, extra bonus!

Recently, I was cleaning out my closet and came across a box of old pictures from high school. There were some prom photos which were bad, some cheerleading (only my freshman year, thank you) shots which were worse, and a couple of candids which were seriously heinous! What was I doing? I'm laughing out loud right now just thinking about it.

I guess that is just one more thing that is so funny about getting older - you can look back fondly on the lengths you went to to look "cool". And you can breathe a big sigh of relief that you don't do it anymore. I don't know about you, but I went through this whole hippie envy phase. I totally wanted to be a flower child, marry a bearded man, go to woodstock, live in a van......its amazing how poverty can seriously appeal to a kid with no concept of money.  I even made a couple pairs of those hippie pants. Yep, you know the ones.....bits of random fabric sewn down the sides of your corduroys. Don't laugh - I bet you did it, too! :)

While I'm not so sure that I have completely grown up, I thank god my sense of style has!  Still, no matter how much my style evolves I just can't kick the hippie habit completely. In fact, I covet the little free thinker that lives within and every once in a while she still makes an outward appearance! Hence, the appeal of these little numbers...

On my way back to the house yesterday, I got a amazing glimpse of Mt. Hood. Between all of the gray clouds I got to sneak a peak at the newly adorned snowy peak. The husband and I are due for a little weekend away and we were debating about heading to the coast or taking a trip into the mountains. We ultimately booked a little cottage overlooking the sea (yay!) for Thanksgiving, but I still have cozy, snowy cabin dreams....maybe Christmas?!? I was looking around online today and found some stunning winter retreats which only fed the dream more - A-framed houses tucked in the woods, gorgeous exposed beams, inviting fireplaces with big stone hearths, windows with amazing views, hot tubs in the snow with a glass of wine - sounds dreamy, doesn't it? I probably won't be headed much further away than the mountain here in Oregon, but a girl can dream....

Don't you just want to wake up here? And to have a morning cup of tea on that balcony....aaaagggghhh. I feel more relaxed already!

Yesterday was so amazingly beautiful here in Portland - the perfect day for fruitin'. We bundled up, put the top down, hopped in the bug, and headed out for some gourds, apples, pears, pumpkins and other fall deliciousness!

Friday Flavor: Fake-caccia

Looks like I'm not the only one that has been swamped lately. Poor Kate over at Gather Catering has been suffering from the "no time to spare" insanity as well! Makes me feel a little less badly about my being a slacker blogger. Misery loves company, I guess! Or, in this case, business loves company! :)

Anyway, this dish sounds right up my alley. Quick, easy and delicious! I love focaccia - so fluffy and dense at the same time - and anything that you can drench in olive oil sounds good to me. Can't wait to give this one a try! Happy Friday and thanks to Kate for her entry this week!

Life is crazy for me right now (hence, the lack of Friday Flavor last week!). I hired a new assistant at work and have been fervently training her for 10 hours a day in the hopes that I can actually bring her up-to-speed enough for me to get ahead. I'm going off that "a stitch in time" adage, hoping that by putting the time in now, it will save me time later! In addition to that, I also catered a big party this week and offered to bring an appetizer to my weekly "Girls' Night". Enter "Fake-caccia". I was driving home from work, wracking my brain as to what I could make to bring for an appetizer. Since expectations tend to run high when it comes to my contribution (I do actually get PAID to make peoples' mouth water), I couldn't get away with a container of pub cheese and pita chips. So, I stopped at the market, grab some pre-made pizza dough and got to it. With fingers crossed, I could only hope it turned out decent enough to bring to my friend's house.

What you need:
1 package of store bought pizza dough (usually hanging out in the refrigerated section of the bakery)
1/2 red onion, sliced
2 1/2 T olive oil, plus a little more
1 t garlic powder
1/2 t salt
1/2 t pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Begin to sautee the onion in a small frying pan with about 1/2 tablespoon of oil. Once that gets going, pour a generous amount of olive oil (about 2 tablespoons) into a 13x9 inch cookie sheet. Remove pizza dough from bag. Slowly begin to stretch with your hands into the general shape of the cookie sheet (if your hands are sticking to the dough, oil them- do not use flour here!). Once you've reached the general size of the cookie sheet, place it in. Work the dough until it just reaches the edges and it is of uniform thickness. Then, form your hands so that they are like scary claws (picture the zombies in the Thriller video) and start poking at the dough, making little divets with your finger tips. Spread the sauteed onion on top of the diveted dough. Sprinkle garlic powder, salt and pepper on top. Drizzle with about 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil. Bake for 15-18 minutes until dough is puffy and just lightly browned on the bottom. Cut into squares and serve with an oil dipping sauce, or thin slices of prosciutto or whatever you'd like!

This has been an insane couple of weeks - so, so sorry for dropping off suddenly! Something had to give and it seemed like the blog was accidentally it. Actually, there was probably more than just the blog, I am just not aware of it yet! I am so happy to be back!

During the blog siesta I have gone slightly over the top, Parisian style. I think it stemmed from the love affair I was having with the Balmain show during Paris Fashion Week. I found myself drooling over all things French....especially their incredible fashion & Christophe Decarnin's amazing designs! I did a little research and found that Balmain was originally founded by Pierre Balmain, who created personal wardrobes for the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot & Sophia Loren. Today, Balmain's clients include the uber-stylish Gwyneth Paltrow, Sofia Coppola, & Audrey Tautou. All amazing style icons!

Basically, I chose that title today because I need one. I am what I would call "crafty", but am miles away from what I would call an "artist". Lately, I have been really drawn to people and their craft. As someone from the outside looking in, I see artists as really honest folk. They put all of their emotion right on the page (or whatever they choose) for all to see. I have been shopping for some art for the house, and this week more than usual, I have been bumping into some amazing artists online. I found this shop Twolia via Lovely Clusters, and saw these gorgeous dreamscapes. I just want to take them, have them blown up, and hang them in my bedroom. The colors are pale and subdued, and the lines are so soft. They make me feel like I am floating....

Are you one of those people where being anywhere close to the ocean just seems to calm you down? I am. Just the thought of heading out to the coast (or the shore, as we native New Englanders like to say) evokes an overall feeling of vacation. Aaagghh. It's one of those 5 senses things - the smell of the air, the beautiful views, the sound of the waves crashing and seagulls cawing, the salt you can taste when the wind whips around, the sand in between your toes. You know how it is! It doesn't even matter what the weather is - stormy, sunny, somewhere in between...the sea always has this way of making me happy and warm inside! I discovered these prints by Frances Seward over the weekend and they seem to do the same thing. I am thinking of getting a couple for my office - they're absolutely gorgeous!

I pretty much wear dresses or skirts every day. Not because I am anti-pants or anything, but because a dress takes way less thought in the morning than sleepily pairing an outfit together. You roll out of bed, brush your hair & teeth, throw a little dress on with some tights and a pair of boots, and you're good to go. Now that winter is near (did I mention how chilly it is here today?), I decided to do a little research into some fun new options for keeping my legs warm on the way to work. I fell upon spats. You know, those things people wear in the military and in marching band to cover the tops of their shoes. I might be behind the times, but I think they're coming back. Maybe as a dressed up version of the leg warmer? They're pretty cute....

I always feel like a bad person when I throw away my disposable coffee cup, especially when it has one of those sleeves that are probably made out of 500 trees each. Scarlett letter

Sometimes I get skeptical about actresses that try to become singers. I am all for expanding the portfolio, but let's face it, it isn't always pretty. This morning, I stopped to grab some coffee and saw the new Scarlett Johanssen and Pete Yorn album on sale. My first thought was how gorgeous she looked on the cover, my second thought was "hmmm, how is this going to work out". I'll be honest, I never listened to her first album. I vaguely remember hearing a review that wasn't the greatest and then I kind of forgot about it. I thought maybe we could take a minute this morning and listen to one of their new songs together. Via youtube.

What did you think? I preface my review with the fact that I am not a music snob. I tend to lean toward more of an indie genre, but really I listen to whatever I like and to whatever suits the mood I'm in. I'm not ashamed of easy listening (C'mon, you know you love it, too!), Britney Spears or Golden Oldies. They all serve their purpose. I mean music is here for entertainment, right. At least that is the way I choose to see it! :)

That said - I like the song. I think it's catchy. The performance isn't the greatest, but I like the sound of Scarlett's voice and I like the old school vibe. It's no She and Him (I love Zooey and M!), but its completely listenable and I'd like to hear more.

This post reminded me of of the Louis Vuitton ads Scarlett did awhile back. A harkin back to the Vargas girls, at least in my mind. Complete vintage glam. Thought I would share before I closed out today. Happy Tuesday!

For those of you that have been following my blog, you know that I started a little vintage shop on Etsy. I am pretty much an antique shop, vintage boutique and estate sale junkie. I get a serious high when I find a treasure. I never thought that I had an addictive personality, but I think this might be my one, big vice. Luckily for the most part, it is not draining my bank account. It's basically a fun way to spend the weekends or pretty much any downtime that I have.

The idea for a vintage shop started because I was always discovering these amazing items, but had to deny myself the buying high because they weren't in my size or didn't necessarily fit my own individual style. A Perfect Peach Vintage is a way for me to justify my habit, and is hopefully a way for me to spread the joy around. I try to find lovely pieces, in excellent condition, to sell at a bargain price. I am adding a bunch of new finds to the shop in the next couple of days and thought I would share a few of my favorites with those that are stopping by the blog today.
